Text:
1 Corinthians 1:25-29
A few days after our Lord Jesus
was welcomed into Jerusalem with
great celebration (Mark
11:9-10), He was crucified on
Golgotha. Hence, it did not
surprise Paul that the preaching
of Christ crucified was a
stumbling block to the Jews.
Foolishness of God (1:25)
The Jews and the Greeks thought
that they had a better way to
save men’s souls than the
atoning work of our Lord Jesus
Christ. What man thinks is wise,
God says it is foolish. Whatever
way man thinks is good, God says
it is corrupt (v. 25).
The Bible teaches that
there is no truth other than
what God has revealed to us in
the Holy Scriptures; there is no
other way than the way of the
Cross; that there is no life
other than that which God offers
through His beloved Son.
+
Lesson:
Salvation is only through Christ
alone. “Neither
is there salvation in any other:
for there is none other name
under heaven given among men,
whereby we must be saved”
(Acts 4:12).
Foolish things of God (1:26-28)
The message of the Gospel is
deemed as foolishness by the
world, the messengers of the
Gospel are also deemed as
foolish things. But God said
that “not many wise men…not many
mighty… not many noble, are
called” (1:26). “Calling” is the
act of God’s redemption (2 Tim.
1:9).
A.Look at Those Who are
Absent
The people who are conspicuously
absent in the church are those
people who hold positions of
power, wealth, and status in
this world, and who regard the
preaching of the Gospel as
foolish (Ps. 2:1-5).
+
Lesson:
“Be wise…be
instructed…Serve the LORD with
fear…Blessed are all they that
put their trust in Him” (Ps.
2:10-12).
B.Look at Those Who are
Present
Generally speaking, the church
is not comprised of the wise,
the mighty, or the noble. Our
Lord Jesus said, “It
is easier for a camel to go
through the eye of a needle,
than for a rich man to enter
into the kingdom of God”
(Matt. 19:24).
+
Lesson:Who then can be saved?“With
men this is impossible; but with
God all things are possible”
(Matt. 19:26).
C.Look at Yourself
What sort of person were you
when God called you? Enemy of
God (Rom. 5:8). Spiritually sick
(Isa. 1:5-6). Poor and needy
(Ps. 40:17;
70:5; 109:21-22;
72:12-13). But God called and
chose you. The word “chosen”
underscores the fact that man’s
coming to God is an act of His
grace and not man’s merit (Deut.
7:6-7).
+
Lesson:God chooses the
foolish things of the world to
confound the wise. He will even
use the person who is deemed as
nothing “to bring to nought
things that are.”
conclusion: for the glory of God
(1:29)
The Gospel is designed to
produce humility. It is a call
to humility. The work of the
Gospel is also designed to
produce humility.
Unbeliever:
There is no exalted path to God.
There is only the way of the
cross. “If
any man will come after Me, let
him deny himself, and take up
his cross, and follow Me”
(Matt. 16:24).
Believer:
The world looks for the
some-bodies. God looks for the
nobodies so that “no
flesh should glory in His
presence” (1:29; 2 Cor.
11:22-30).
