The City of
Corinth
Corinth
is situated on a narrow
strip of land linking
the Aegean Sea on the
East and the Adriatic
Sea on the west. It was
a city of commerce and
trade. It was the
capital of the province
of Achaia. It was known
for its culture and
entertainment and its
pagan worship of
Aphrodite. Corinth was
also known for its moral
corruption
(1 Cor. 6:9-10).
However, Paul did not
ask the believers in
Corinth to move out of
Corinth.
+
Lesson:
As a Christian, what
should you do in a
godless society?
(Phil. 2:14-15).
The
Church of Corinth
The
church at Corinth was
founded by Paul near the
end of his second
missionary trip (Acts
18:1). In Corinth,
Aquila and Priscilla
risked their lives to
help Paul (Rom. 16:3-5).
Apollos took over Paul
as the pastor in Corinth
(Acts 18:24-28). The
church in Corinth had
many problems – strife,
wrong doctrines, moral
corruption.
+
Lesson:
Serve the Lord as a
family.
+
Lesson:
To be effective in your
service, you must be
willing to learn.
The Christian in
Corinth
The “church” is
a “body of believers.”
Believers are “sanctified
in Christ Jesus, called
to be saints”
(1:2b). “Sanctified”
means is
“to be set apart.”
“Saint” is used in the
Bible to refer to any
believer in Christ
Jesus. Our
sanctification is not
the product of our good
works but the work of
our Lord Jesus Christ
(Heb. 10:10). But not
every one who is a
Christian lives like
one.
+
Lesson:
Sanctification is also a
life-long process of
becoming more and more
like Jesus. (2 Peter
1:3-10).
Conclustion
Jesus
is the only means for
our sanctification.
Unbeliever:
Are you set apart from sin unto God? Have you put your trust in Jesus as
your Saviour?
Believer: Salvation is free,
but sanctification is
going to cost your whole
life. Are you living for
Christ?
