INTRODUCTION

I.          THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD

a.   He has the ability and power to do whatsoever He pleases.

His power is as great as His will, so that only God can really say “I am God, and there is none like me” (Isa 46:9b)… “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure” (Isa 46:10b).

b.   The Omnipotence is an essential attribute of God.

      (1)  Omnipotence is essentially His.

             (a)     The word “Omnipotent” means all-powerful.

 (b)     Even one of the Hebrew names for God, “EL Shaddai” speaks of His power.

(2)    His power can be neither increased (since it is already infinite) nor diminished.

II.         THE EXPRESSION OF THE INFINITE POWER OF GOD

God’s power is expressed in various ways.  We shall consider a few of them.

            1.         In Creation

a.         God said, and it was done.

He said, “Let there be light: and there was light” (Gen 1:3).

(1)        No one helped God to create the world.

In fact, He created the world out of nothing.

(2)           God said, “I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself” (Isa 44:24b).

b.         The psalmist called upon His creation to praise Him, and he gave his reason.

            (1)        Psalm 148:1-5

His reason is mentioned in verse 5, “for he commanded, and they were created.”

(2)        David praised the God of Creation.  He says “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth” (Ps 33:6)

(3)        God’s power is absolute.

c.         When we look at His creation, it should cause us to appreciate His infinite power.

2.             In Salvation

We see God’s power expressed in the redemption of man.

a.         Think of all that led up to our redemption.

            (1)        The virgin birth is a miracle.

Listen to what Mary said to the angel, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” (Lk 1:34)

Verse 37: “For with God nothing shall be impossible.”

(2)        The execution of the plan of salvation was the most difficult kind of work.

(a)           It was the greatest display of God’s power than creation.

(b)        It was not easy for the God of glory to carry out the plan of redemption.

Think of the sacrifice He had to go through from Philippians 2:6-8

[1]        We begin at the top, where we see Him as “Being in the form of God” (2:6a).

[2]        He “made himself of no reputation” (2:7a)

[3]        He “took upon him the form of a servant” (2:7b).

[4]        He was “made in the likeness of men” (2:7c).

[5]        He “humbled himself” (Phil 2:8a).

[6]        He was “obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Phil 2:8b).

b.         Paul points out that salvation is a powerful work of God.

God always finishes what He starts.

“He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil 1:6).

3.         In the Resurrection

God’s infinite power is also manifested in His ability to raise the dead.

a.         During the ministry of Jesus Christ, He was able to raise people from the dead.

(1)        He raised a widow’s son (Luke 7:11-15).

(2)        He raised Jairus’ daughter (Matt 9:18-19, 23-26; Mk 5:22-24, 35-43).

(3)        He raised Lazarus from the dead (Jn 11:17-44).

b.         During His ministry, the Lord Jesus spoke of His death, and His ability to rise from the dead.

(1)        He says “I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again…” (Jn 10:17b, 18).

(2)        Jesus was able to face the death of the cross because He Himself had the power to conquer death.

c.         Jesus really died and He rose again (1 Cor 15:3, 4).

(1)        Through His death, He destroyed the power of Satan, who had the power of death (Heb 2:14).

(2)        Revelation 1:18I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

III.        OUR RESPONSE

What is our response to the power of God?

            1.         Worship

a.         We are to worship God because of His power.

b.         Worship is our response to God.  We show our gratitude for WHO HE IS.

2.         Confidence

God’s power is a source of confidence.

a.         Whenever you feel inadequate, remember Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

b.         1 Thessalonians 5:24 says “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.”

3.         Comfort

a.         When you are worrying about something, and you realize that there is nothing too great for God to handle.

            You receive great comfort.

b.         God Himself says “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?” (Jer 32:27).

4.         What should be our response to the Almighty God?

            a.         Humility!

b.         1 Peter 5:6 says “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.
