INTRODUCTION

1.          Romans 8 is one of the greatest chapters of the Bible.

Someone has said, “If the Holy Scriptures were a ring, the Book of Romans would be the jewel in the centre, then Romans 8 would be the sparkling point of the jewel.”

2.         In the real sense, Romans 8 is the condition of Paul’s treatise on Salvation.  It answers the question, “How does God save sinners?”

3.         There remains just one more question that may arise: “Will this divine method of justification and sanctification last?” Will our salvation in Christ last forever?

I.    CHRIST ASSURES US

1.          There is no condemnation.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (Rom 8:1).

a.          Do you know who said it?

            The Lord Jesus said it.

John 5:24 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

In another occasion, the Lord Jesus said, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand” (Jn 10:28).

b.         Christ taught this truth, and Paul developed it in Romans 8:1.

2.         The Law cannot claim us.

a.          We have been made free from the law of sin and death (v2).

b.         Now, we have life in the Spirit.

c.          We have moved into the new way of life in Christ.

3.         The Law cannot condemn us.  Why?

Because Christ has already suffered that condemnation for us on the cross.

4.         The Law cannot control us.

II.     THE  HOLY  SPIRIT  IS  IN  US

The Holy Spirit is referred to 20 times in Romans 8, and only 8 times in all the other chapters of Romans.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

-                           The Holy Spirit is God, He is a member of the Holy Trinity.

-                           He does the work of Creation (Gen 1:2).

-                           He convicts men of their sins (Jn 16:8) and brings salvation to their souls (Jn 3:8).

-                           The Lord Jesus has promised to send Him to dwell in the hearts of the believers (Jn 16:7).

-                           He dwells in our hearts to assure us of our salvation (Eph 1:13, 14).

Let us see what the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives in Romans 8, in brief.

1.          The Holy Spirit produces in us a certain mindset to live out our spiritual lives in the way that will please God (8:5-8).

2.         The Holy Spirit dwells within the believer (8:9).

3.         The Holy Spirit leads the believer.

4.         The Holy Spirit adopts the believer.

5.         The Holy Spirit helps us in our infirmities (8:26).

Conclusion:       The Holy Spirit dwells in us to assure us that we belong to God.

III     GOD IS FOR US

1.          The Promise of God

“If God be for us, who can be against us?” (8:31).

a.          God has acted for the believer who believes in Jesus.

(1)        He did it because He loves us despite our sinful condition.

(2)        He has done everything necessary to save us from sin.

Romans 8:32 says, “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”

b.         God does not condemn us.

(1)        He does not charge us with sin.

(2)        In fact, God “justifies us” (8:33).  He forgives our sin and count us righteous in Christ.

2.         The Love of God.

a.          Romans 8:39 says, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”

b.         This is the assurance that God gives to us.

c.          How marvellous, and how wonderful is Jesus’ love for you and me!

Do you love Him?
