Sermon Outline

We have studied several different persons concerning their problems. We discovered several different kinds of loneliness.

- The loneliness of sin was seen in the life of Cain.

- The loneliness of suffering was seen in the life of Job

- The loneliness of service was seen in the life of Moses.

- The loneliness of self-pity in Elijah’s life.

- The loneliness of sorrow in Mary and Martha’s life.

The older brother warned us about the loneliness of stubbornness.  Finally, the Lord Jesus has the answer to all loneliness if we put our faith in Him.

“Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price (v.1). Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness (v.2).  Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David” (Isa 55:1–3).

That is God’s invitation to anyone who is lonely.  God says, “Come” to Him.  He will meet our needs.  Let us see what message the Lord gives to these people.

I. Cain: The Loneliness of Sin

I believe the message of Jesus to Cain is found in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

1.  “I am the way.”

Jude 11 talks about “the way of Cain….”

What is “the way of Cain?”  Cain’s way of religion is the way of doing your best with what you have, but not trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ.  Jesus would say to Cain, “I am the way” (Jn 14:6).

2.  Jesus also said, “I am the truth” (Jn 14:6).

Cain was a liar.  The reason many people are lonely is because they will not face the truth.  Jesus said, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (Jn 8:32).

3.  Jesus said, “I am the life” (Jn 14:6).  If you want eternal life, you must come to Him.  Only Jesus can save you and give you eternal life.

II.        Job

What message would the Lord Jesus give to Job?  I think He would say to Job as He had said to Peter and the disciples in Luke 22:31–32.  “And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat (v.31):  But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren” (v.32).

1.  Job did not know that Satan and God were talking about him in heaven.

2.  Our Lord Jesus said to the disciples that our experience of suffering is like the sifting of wheat.  Jesus said to Peter, “I have prayed for thee” (Lk 22:32a).

III.       Moses

1.  What message would the Lord Jesus give to Moses?

2.  I think the message that Jesus would give to Moses is found in Matthew 11:28–30, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (v.28).  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls (v.29).  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (v.30).

3.  Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me” (Matt 11:29a).

IV.       The  Older  Brother

What would Jesus say to the older brother?  I believe that His words in Matthew 6 would apply to him.

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors (v.12).  For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you (v.14):  But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matt 6:12, 14, 15).

1.  The older brother was lonely because he was stubborn.  He would not forgive his brother.

2.  Forgiveness is a bridge that we must cross at one time or another.  “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you” (Eph 4:32).

3.  These are the messages Jesus would give to these lonely people.

F   If you are lonely today because of sin, Christ can forgive you.

F   If you are lonely because of suffering, He can give you grace and strength.

F   If you are lonely in your service, take His yoke, do His work together with Him and He will give you rest.

F   If you are in the loneliness of stubbornness, He will help you to forgive and to love others.

Come to Jesus now. Let Him change your life!
