The way of a Blessed Man
(Psalm 1)

By Mr John Loo

"Blessed" is the man, indeed "happy" is he who is in the Lord’s will and his happiness comes from his spiritual relationship with God.

Here, in Psalm 1, is such a man. He has decided in his heart not to do the things that will displease his God. He has decided to walk in the way of God. Decision must be followed by action. He decidedly does what is to be done, "… walketh not, standeth not and sitteth not" with those who are opposed to God. Daniel is one supreme example of a man who sought to please God in all his ways, even in captivity, as recorded in Daniel 1:8, "... Daniel purposed in his heart . . ."

The path of a blessed man is mapped out in v. 2, "But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night". Herein is the answer to pleasing God. Happiness has to do with our relationship with God. We are to live a God-centered life. We must believe that God exists and He speaks to us through His Word — The Law. The righteous man finds his happiness in the reading of God’s Word. He devotes his time and energy in the holy pursuit of knowing the will of his Creator as revealed in the Old and New Testaments. It is God’s Word that feeds the soul and satisfies the inner man.

The believer is to love the Word with his whole heart. "…he meditate day and night" speaks of his thoughts constantly being on God and His Word. He always draws his strength from God’s Word in times of weakness and peace in times of trouble. It will keep him from sin and make his way righteous. We must search the Scriptures, meditate upon them, memorise them and hide them in our hearts. The way to God and the secret to happiness lie in every believer’s devotion to Him.

A man who is right with God is likened to "a tree planted by the rivers of water" whose planter is God. Ultimately, a Christian’s life is rooted in God, in His Word, in His service. Here we see that his very need is taken care of, his life indeed is watered by the goodness of God.

Water is a very precious commodity; it is the very essence of life. A man, without the spiritual refreshing water of the One who is the Water of life, the Lord Jesus Christ, will not find eternal life. The Lord Jesus Christ is the living Water as He revealed to the Samaritan woman, "But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:14). Do you have the living Water? Have you come to believe in Him?

Having found the Water, he "bringeth forth his fruit in his season". Properly planted and nurtured and supplied with adequate water, the tree will bring forth its fruit in its season. Saved by grace, the blessed man will naturally show forth fruit of the Holy Spirit but "his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper". He will not only reveal outwardly the signs of inward life but also the spiritual prosperity that will culminate in his life.

In contrast, those who chose to go the way of the world will meet their ultimate end — death and damnation. They have decided and God will leave them to their decisions as they persistently cling to their sinful ways.

Our lives are in the hands of God the Almighty. "For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous" (v. 6). Those who have come to put their trust in Christ will have His blessings. The way to eternal happiness is through Him, and with Him as our eternal Guide, He will bring us safely to our destination.

Are you that blessed man?
